The UP Medical Students’ Society (UP MSS) held Fridays at the East (FATE) last April 12, 2019, at the PGH Science Hall.
Bands from the College of Medicine played their hearts out in the annual battle-of-the-bands to claim that championship title. The event’s theme, SOUNDTRACK, focused on music from soundtracks of recent movies, offering up much-needed evening of great music and good vibes for everyone to destress from one hell of a week.
The 2023 Band “Three Month Rule” kicked the night off with a hit from the Academy Award winning film, Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, getting into groove with Sunflower (Post Malone ft. Swae Lee), followed by renditions of Bad, and Cake by the Ocean (DNCE). T.U.P.S was up next with great performances of Gold on the Ceiling (The Black Keys) from Ocean’s 8, Ride (ZZ Ward), and Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes). Keeping up the energy, the Amici Worms followed, all suited up for their number. They wowed the crowd with Redbone (Childish Gambino), Start a Fire (John Legend), and Earned It (The Weeknd).
A special intermission number from Indayog gets the crowd even more hyped as the much-loved dance group amped up the mood for the evening!
The Phi Band followed and got the audience clapping and singing along to their choices of music for the night, playing the Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin) from Thor: Ragnarok, Jump (Van Halen), and Don’t Stop Me Now (Queen).
The last competing band was Bandang ENT who capped off the night with Look What I Found and two songs from the heart-wrenching remake of A Star is Born – Always Remember Us This Way (Lady Gaga) and Black Eyes (Bradley Cooper).
The MSS Band then took the stage with their renditions of “Sit Still, Look Pretty”, “Ang Awit Natin”, and “Mamma Mia”.
After an evening filled with fantastic performances, it was the Phi Band who took home the championship title with the first and second runner-up prizes going to the Three Month Rule and The Amici Worms respectively.
Special awards were also given out for the night to recognize stand-out performers! Best Bassist was awarded to Aljero Jimenez from the Three Month rule while Best Drummer went to Matt Hernandez who played for the Three Month Rule, The Amici Worms, and Bandang E.N.T. Rafael Tupas won the Best Guitarist award, playing for T.U.P.S, and Jed Golez was recognized as Best on Keys, playing for both the Three Month Rule and the Amici Worms. Finally, the Best Vocalist award went to Pat Valdez for her stellar performance for the Phi Band. It was certainly a wonderful night to cap off a stressful week!
