The UP Medical Students’ Society, in media partnership with WhenInManila.com, presents to you: Code Yellow: Ascent, to be held on March 2 and 16, at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine!
What is Code Yellow?
Code Yellow is an Intersectoral Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) case competition designed for college students and graduates in the National Capital Region (NCR) that helps real life communities manage their concerns in DRRM.
In the recently concluded Associate of Philippine Medical Colleges – Student Network (APMC-SN) National Convention, the UP Medical Students’ Society was bestowed the Ten Outstanding Medical Students Organizations (TOMSO) 2019 award for this advocacy.
Last year’s Code Yellow, titled “Code Yellow: United Front”, included Sabtang, Batanes and Limasawa Island, Southern Leyte. Sabtang was able to incorporate a centralized communications center for disasters because the vice mayor realized the importance of DRRM during the event. Limasawa was able to incorporate DRRM in their subsequent budget planning as well.
“Code Yellow was an enriching and enlightening experience. It taught me the truths about DRRM, such as how we need to consider a lot of factors which affect the community, such as their environment, their economics, their politics, and even their culture, in formulating our plans,” said Ged Llanes, a participant in last year’s competition.
What happens next
This year will be more exciting! Join the brightest minds from various colleges, guided by experts at the forefront of their fields, to create a joint DRMM plan for our current partner community in Igbaras, Iloilo. Day 1 of the conference will help participants learn the tools and skills they need to create a feasible DRRM plan, and Day 2 will hold the competition proper, with feedback from the members of the community itself.
Any college student or graduate can participate. If you’re an advocate of proactive DRRM planning with a desire to help a real community, you can start now and be part of the Code Yellow teams! You can still sign up for the competition proper, even without attending the conference day!
In the aftermath of every calamity, there is nowhere to go but up.
