In the spirit of Valentine’s week, doctors, nurses, technicians, ward staff, guards, utility personnel, and other workers of the Philippine General Hospital were treated to free cups of coffee and hot chocolate last February 12, 2019.
Hosted by the UP Pangkalusugang Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral (UP PAGSAMA), the annual event, Cup of Love, aimed to share in the value of appreciation in the small things by providing smiles and warm cups of coffee for hospital workers, who were otherwise simply spending another work night on duty.
Beginning nine o’clock in the evening, members and applicants of the organization assembled near the front of the hospital, distilled water and electric kettles at the ready. Hundreds of sachets of a variety of coffee and hot chocolate were gathered in neat rows.
Pink, blue, and white cups decorated with stickers bearing inspirational quotes such as “Leave sparkles wherever you go” and “Do all things with love” were loaded onto trays and distributed across the PGH main building. Groups of volunteers walked around the corridors, greeted hospital workers as they passed by, and offered the warm drinks.
Among the wards and departments sharing in the celebration were Wards 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 14A, 15, OB Admitting Section, Emergency Room, Department of Radiology on the first floor; Wards 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14B, and 16 on the second floor; Central Block on the third floor; and Labor Room/Delivery Room and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on the fourth floor.
“It’s definitely an experience to remember,” says Lorena Osorio (Class 2021), head of the event. “Walking into the wards and offices with free coffee took everyone by pleasant surprise. It’s a small way to give back to our hardworking hospital workforce, but we hope we helped let them know they are appreciated all the same.”
“Cup of Love was a sweet opportunity for UP PAGSAMA members, applicants, and alumni to bond as they worked together in spreading love and showing gratitude to the PGH community,” says Juri Faulan (Class 2022), Deputy Coordinating Officer of the organization. “With the hectic schedule and sleepless shifts of nurses, guards, clerks, interns, residents, watchers, and other members of the PGH community, it is easy to forget and be disoriented with the events outside the hospital. Hopefully with the simple gesture of serving coffee and hot chocolate, UP PAGSAMA was able to let the PGH community feel “kilig” and be energized with a Cup of Love this Valentine’s season.”
