The UP MedChoir’s Homecoming Concert

After their incredible 4-Gold Medal win at the 7th Bali International Choir Festival (BICF 7), the UP Medicine Choir (UP MedChoir) held a Homecoming Concert, entitled How Great Thou Art, at the PGH Chapel last October 26, 2018.

The program began with the pieces performed by the UP MedChoir at the BICF 7. The first three songs, pieces performed under the Mixed Youth category, were introduced by Ged Llanes (Class 2021). They first performed “Jubilate Deo” (Giovanni Gabrieli) followed by “Sitivit Anima Mea” (Richard Burchard) with soloists Ged Llanes, Franz Libre (Class 2021), Ian Macinas (Class 2020), and Jae Salvan. Complete with matching choreography and alternative sounds, the UP MedChoir caps the segment off with  “Benggong” (Ken Steven) with soloists Ged Llanes and Justine Jacinto (Class 2020).

The next three songs were introduced by Franz Libre. These songs were under the Musica Sacra category in BICF 7. They filled the chapel with songs of praise consisting of “Abenlied, Op. 69, No. 3” (Josef Rheinberger), “Ascendit Deus” (Peter Philips), and “Ama Namin” (arr. Fidel Calalang, Jr.).

Introduced by Gillian De Luna (Class 2022), “Cantate Domino” (Jose Elberin)  and “Sa Iyong Mga Yakap” (Jose Cerini Jr; arr. Samuel V. Guerrero) kicked off the second part of the program. “Sa Iyong Mga Yakap” was a song requested by the UPCM Class 2018 for their Commencement Rites last July. Nadine Uy (Class 2020) introduced the next two songs — “Till There Was You” (Meredith Williams; arr. Chris Borela) and “Commercial Jingle Medley” (arr. Hans Bondoc). “Commercial Jingle Medley” brought laughter to audience with a mix of famous jingles of brands with soloists Aldwin Baronda (Class 2022), Hans Bondoc (Class 2022), Mikee Chan (Class 2022), Liza Laroco (Class 2022), Jam Lazarte (Class 2021), Franz Libre, Ged Llanes, and Mit Tare (Class 2021).

With the entrance of the new batch of UP MedChoir trainees, the next part was introduced by Felix Dioso (Class 2025). With Dave Robles (Class 2019) as soloist, the UP MedChoir performed “No Importa La Distancia” (Alan Menken and Dave Zippel; arr. John August Pamintuan), a Spanish version of “Go the Distance” from Disney’s Hercules.

Pia Nebrada (Class 2025) introduces the next piece, “Dancing Queen” (benny Andersson, Stig Anderson, Bjorn Ulvaeus; arr. Deke Sharon). True to the piece, the UP MedChoir accompanied it with matching choreography. Before the final song, Choirmaster Maryam Remoto (Class 2019) gave thanks to all the supporters of the UP Medicine Choir and to God. Their final song, “How Great Thou Art” (Swedish Melody; Text: Stuart Wesley Hine; arr. Robert Delgado) with soloists Gillian De Luna and Jam Lazarte, was the theme of this concert.

With the audience’s cheers, the UP MedChoir performed two encore songs — Kalesa (arr. Robert Delgado) and Man in the Mirror (Michael Jackson). It was truly a magical night of music, art, and praise.
