University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM) bagged the championship in both the 7th National Medical Quiz Bee (NMQB) and the National Medical Students’ Research Competition (NMSRC) in the latest Association of Philippine Medical Colleges – Student Network (APMC-SN) National Convention last February 7-9, 2018 at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), Intramuros, Manila.
The winning quiz bee team of UPCM is composed of Linnaeus Louisse A. Cruz (Class 2021), Frinz Moey C. Rubio (Class 2020) and Anthony Kimo L. Bello (Class 2019) with Tiffany Grace C. Uy (Class 2020) acting as alternate. The team made it through the Easy, Average and Difficult Rounds with 15 questions each, besting 35 other schools from around the Philippines, before making it to the Top 5 Teams that qualified to the Final Jeopardy Round. After 20 minutes of strategic picking of categories and buzzer upon buzzer attempts of answering the questions, emerged victorious at 800 points, beating De La Salle Health Sciences Institute – College of Medicine at 700 points and Cebu Institute of Medicine at 300 points.
On the other hand, the research led by Markyn Jared N. Kho (Class 2020) with the title “Antipyretic Activity of Plectranthus scutellarioides (Mayana) Aqueous Leaf Extracts in ICR Mice (Mus musculus)”, was one of the three studies that qualified from the National Capital Region and Southern Luzon Cluster (NCR-SL) of APMC-SN. After the poster presentation last February 7, the oral presentation and question and answer portion last February 9, the research of Kho et al came out on top with Davao Medical School Foundation placing 2nd and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila placing 3rd.
The NMQB and NMSRC, along with the National Clinico-Pathologic Conference Competition, are few of the many activities in the first ever APMC-SN National Convention with the theme “LINANG: Shaping Physicians To Respond To Challenging Times”, the biggest student-led convention of medical students in the country. Among the other activities included plenaries, breakout sessions, a cultural tour and an Amazing Race. The convention also included the regional and national caucuses where regional and national APCM-SN officers were elected, respectively.
